“It’s” Over and You Don’t Even Know It

You know how sometimes in life we can get involved in something or with someone that we know we shouldn’t be getting involved with? Often the things we get involved in are over before we even know it. We may not know it early on, or may not want to see “it” for what “it” really is, but others can see that the “it” in our lives is over before we see it.

Life and the decisions that come with it takes discernment, wisdom and putting everything before the Holy Spirit for His guidance. I’ve certainly made unwise decisions in life, and have gotten involved in things, thinking that they would be ok, but knowing deep down that “it” wasn’t the best choice, but in essence that thing was over and I didn’t even know it- or didn’t want to see that it was over.

One of the clearest examples of this is dating. Perhaps you can relate, and I certainly can that you meet someone and they aren’t spiritually yoked to you and they don’t want to be spiritually yoked- or- there is no compatibility but you continue in a relationship with them because you think it can work, but in reality, it can’t. You continue to date someone that you know wants children but you don’t. You continue to date someone that you know you won’t marry but you date them because you don’t want to be alone or they’re just fun for you. But in these examples, the reality is the relationship is over.

When I look at the example of Samson, I see a man that though he was called by God, even before his birth, he made decisions that resulted in his downfall. Samson was often bitter and full of revenge. It wasn’t until his death that he became a proper judge for Israel. But, he decided to marry a Philistine woman, a woman who was the enemy to the Israelites. And Samson’s parents warned him not to marry her:

When he returned, he said to his father and mother, “I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”
His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?”
But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s the right one for me.”
— Judges 14: 2-3, NIV

Even though God had a plan for Samson to confront the Philistines through his marriage to this woman, the marriage didn’t work.

And then Delilah betrayed Samson. Again, he got into a second relationship with a woman that was over before he knew it- or maybe he didn’t want to see Delilah for who she was. She wasn’t Godly and she began working with the Philistines so that they could take away Samson’s strength.

The thing about the things of life that are over and we don’t even know it, but others can see that “it” will be over in time- is that I think, we know that “it” is over. Deep down we know if a person we’re dating or thinking to get involved with (can be platonic too) is not good. I think, if we have common sense we know that we should not get involved in such situations. We know what everyone around us already knows but we still keep going headstrong in the direction of knowing “it” will end. We must use our heads because “it” can eventually cause us or another person great pain, and we’ll have no one to blame but ourselves because we didn’t allow discernment, wisdom, or the Holy Spirit to guide us in our decision making.

So, let’s be people that avoid “it” being over before we know it- even though we probably now it. Let’s be people that are not senses led but Spirit led.

Happy Friday!
