Seele Magazine: I think the first question anyone wonders when they hear what you're doing is why. Why are you riding your bike across the world?

Javier:

(En Español) El deporte siempre ha formado parte de mi día a día y viajar es una pasión que siempre he tenido. Llevo viajando desde que cumplí los 18 años de edad. Dar la vuelta al mundo siempre ha sido un sueño, así que cuando terminé la universidad decidí luchar por el sueño de mi vida y unirlo a mi pasión, el deporte.

(In English) Sports have always been part of my daily life and traveling is a passion I've always had. I've been traveling since I was 18 years old. Seeing as much of the world as I can has always been a dream, so when I finished college I decided to fight for the dream of my life, which is joined to my passion of sports.

SM: How do you decide which countries and cities you want to visit?

Javier:

(En Español) Simplemente dejándome llevar por la curiosidad y las posibilidades a la hora de cruzar una frontera. Me hubiera gustado visitar Australia, pero no he podido por el dinero, la reservo para la próxima aventura.

(In English) I’m simply led by curiosity and all the possibilities that a new place has to offer, when I cross a border. I would have liked to visit Australia, but it was not possible financially, so I will leave it for the next adventure.

SM: Describe a challenging situation or an encounter that really affected you on your journey so far.

Javier:

(En Español) En Pakistán sobreviví a dos atentados terroristas en menos de 12 horas, en el primer atentado perdieron la vida 24 personas, y en el segundo resulté herido. He visto muchas desagracias en la carretera debido a negligencias, donde más en India, Vietnam y en Perú. Soporte -20ºC pedaleando durante un mes en Turquía, y 55ºC en el Death Valley. Cada día es un nuevo reto y una nueva aventura, nunca se lo que voy a encontrar.

(In English) In Pakistan I survived two terrorist attacks in less than 12 hours. The first attack killed 24 people, and in the second I was injured. I have had many misfortunes on the road due to negligence, especially in India, Vietnam and Peru. I endured pedalling in -20 C (-4 F) temperatures for a month in Turkey, and 55 C (151 F) temperatures in Death Valley. Every day is a new challenge and a new adventure; I never know what I'll find.

SM: When you run into challenges what is your source of strength?

Javier:

(En Español) Tengo mentalidad de guerrero, nunca dejo de luchar y cuanto mayor es el problema o complicación, mayores son mis fuerzas para luchar, jamás me rindo. Los retos más hermosos son contra la naturaleza, soportando el frio y calor extremo atravesando desiertos, selvas, montañas y bosques.

(In English) My mentality is like that of a warrior, I never stop fighting. The bigger the problem or complication, the greater my strength to fight and never give up. The most beautiful challenges are against nature, withstanding extreme heat and cold through deserts, jungles, mountains and forests.

SM: What has changed you and how do you now look at the world and people?

Javier:

(En Español) El mundo es amor y hospitalidad. He conocido a una de las culturas más malinterpretadas de la sociedad actual, la musulmana. No podemos dejar que unos pocos psicópatas hablen por los demás musulmanes, ya que son personas hospitalarias, amigables y cercanas. Para mi ha sido uno de los mayores descubrimientos de este viaje.

(In English) The world is love and hospitality. I met one of the most misunderstood cultures in today's society, the Muslim world. We cannot let a few psychopaths speak for other Muslims, as they are hospitable, friendly and loving. For me, it has been one of the greatest discoveries of this trip.

SM: How does your journey change from region to region- Europe, the Middle East, Asia, South America, North America, Africa?

Javier:

(En Español) El primer cambio fue al salir de Europa y entrar en Oriente medio, conocí la cultura musulmana. En el sudeste asiático me sorprendió la comida y la selva. Canadá y EEUU fue volver al primer mundo y al capitalismo. Latinoamérica fue un cambio agradable al volver a hablar español, y África está siendo un descubrimiento constante, todo es nuevo para mí a pesar de todo lo que he visto hasta el momento, lo más impresionante es la vida salvaje.

(In English) The first change was coming out of Europe and into the Middle East when I encountered the Muslim culture. In Southeast Asia I was surprised by the food and the jungle. In Canada and the U.S. I was back to the first world and Capitalism. Latin America was a nice change, because I could speak Spanish again, and Africa is being in a constant Discovery. Everything is new to me and despite everything I've seen so far, the most impressive for me is the wildlife.

SM: When we look at the news sometimes, we find that the world is portrayed as a scary place. Now that you have been traveling through it for 2 years, what are your thoughts on places you cycled through like Iran and Vietnam?

Javier:

(En Español) He dejado de tener miedo infundado por la televisión y la prensa internacional. El mundo es amor y hospitalidad, las personas de buen corazón predominan en la tierra, la bondad es una cualidad de todo ser humano y la generosidad su mayor expresión. Recibo ayuda a diario de desconocidos, que en pocos minutos pasan a ser conocidos, sin su apoyo jamás hubiera llegado tan lejos.

(In English) I have ceased to have unfounded fears spread by the television and the international press. The world is love and hospitality, filled with kind-hearted people, who I believe predominate on earth. I have found goodness is a quality of every human being and generosity is its best. Every day I get help from strangers, which after a  few minutes we get to know each other. Without their support I would have never have gotten so far.

SM: When will you stop cycling the world and what do you want to do when you're done?

Javier:

(En Español) Probablemente buscar un trabajo de mi profesión, Ingeniero Químico, aunque quizás siga viajando uno o dos años más en periodos de 3 meses para completar una serie de nuevos proyectos que se me han ocurrido durante este viaje. La aventura es adictiva!

(In English) I anticípate that I will probably look for a job in my profession of Chemical Engineer. Although I may still travel for one or two more years in periods of 3 months to complete a series of new projects that have come my way during this trip. The adventure is addictive!

SM: What has been the most exciting place you've visited and why?

Javier:

(En Español) La última ha sido Zimbabue. Nunca vi un elefante salvaje tan de cerca y a orillas del Lago Kariba tuve manadas completas a escasos metros de mí. Es una experiencia única, estar en frente del más grande de la sabana africana. Además, vi cocodrilos, cebras, búfalos e hipopótamos y sin pagar nada ya que entrar al Parque Nacional es gratuito. Un privilegio para una persona como yo, que viaja con tan pocos recursos.

(In English) The last has been Zimbabwe. I never saw a wild elephant before Zimbabwe. At the shores of Lake Kariba I was meters away from a herd of elephants- so close! It is a unique experience, being in front of the largest (lake) of the African savannah. I also saw crocodiles, zebras, buffalo and hippos and without paying anything since entering the National Park is free. A privilege for a person like me, traveling with so few resources.
